Local and State Government Affairs

For the past several decades, NAIOP has played an active role in the legislative process in Olympia, in Washington, DC and in local government. Involvement at the grass roots level by members and professional staff has yielded significant results. NAIOP’s strategic plan addresses the issue in a major goal to “Achieve favorable political and legal conditions for commercial real estate activities.” It goes on to spell out five activities to further this goal:
  1. Maintain an active role in the development of public policy.

  2. Maintain monitoring and political advocacy programs and the local and state government levels.

  3. Coordinate federal government activities with national NAIOP staff and communicate with the state’s congressional delegation.

  4. Provide a stable funding source for government relations activities.

  5. Communicate current concerns and promote the value of government relations activities to the NAIOP membership.
Much of our state government and legislative activity is directed by Gavel (the State Legislative Forum), an organization within NAIOP that helps set policy and fund advocacy efforts. For information on how to get involved, click on the Gavel button. NAIOP contracts with an experienced and highly respected contract lobbyist, Greg Hanon, who provides counsel and advocacy services for our issues.

NAIOP’s Government Affairs Committee is working to build an advocacy alliance with other construction and real estate related trade associations in the Puget Sound region to influence policy making at the city and county levels. Sharing information and teaming up to strengthen efforts on common concerns are our major goals.
