July Breakfast: Innovative Projects 2016

As Seattle grows into a world-class innovation hub for industries such as cloud computing, biotech and philanthropy, our local design and development community has also been pushing the evolution of Seattle’s built environment. At our July breakfast, learn from three local, leading companies who are innovating in construction and delivery; sustainable materials; and workplace culture via place design.

Construction & Delivery: 47+7 Apartments
Presented by: Matthew M. Grunert, CollinsWoerman
47+7 is a six-story, 24-unit apartment project in Seattle’s University District. Through the team’s “kit of parts” approach to its design and construction, the project was completed by a construction crew of 10, handling 90% fewer parts and delivering the highly sustainable, aesthetically appealing building in 50% of the typical construction timeline.

Sustainability: Cross Laminated Timber
Presented by: Susan Jones, Atelierjones
Before Microsoft, Starbucks and even Boeing, Seattle was a timber town. Yet today, developers in Australia, Europe and Canada are building 14-, 24- and 33-story buildings out of wood while we continue with mostly steel and concrete structures. Cross laminated timber (CLT) is a highly sustainable building material and Atelierjones is a local expert helping further its use here in Seattle in projects large and small.

Culture & Use: Amazon HQ's Flexible Workspace and Amenities to Drive Productivity
Presented by: Dale Alberda & John Savo, NBBJ
Amazon sought place design that would reinforce its strong emphases on nimbleness, innovation and productivity. From diverse seating types and environments to allow for various modes, moods and types of work, to amenities floors that create a sense of neighborhood for employees, the campus and its buildings are designed to enhance workplace environment while integrating with the community.
