Change Makers 2023

There has been a lot of talk recently about revitalizing the downtown Seattle core, but what about the successes occurring in our many neighborhood communities around the area? This August, our annual Change Makers event will offer a look into how Seattle's neighborhoods are coming back from the pandemic and encouraging sustainable practices around commuting and community building. Hosted at Fremont Crossing, this event will highlight Fremont's growth and successes and encourage conversations around commuting, sustainability, and neighborhood activation.

The event will include short presentations from Rachel Brombaugh (PACE Equity) and Kirk Hovenkotter (Commute Seattle). Rachel is the Washington State Managing Director for PACE Equity, a national capital provider for commercial real estate projects using the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) mechanism. Before joining PACE Equity, Rachel was the Director of Climate and Energy Initiatives for King County, where she developed and administered the King County C-PACER program, which enables property owners to access long-term, fixed-rate, non-recourse capital for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and resiliency components of their buildings. Rachel will highlight the role of funding in the development of high-performance, sustainable buildings, and the redevelopment and revitalization of communities.

Kirk serves as Executive Director of Commute Seattle and has advised mayors, county executives, and transit agencies on effective approaches to bus network redesigns and fare policy. He has spoken about ridership trends and what makes transit useful in national outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Wired, and Governing. At Change Makers, Kirk will share how people get around Seattle today and how property managers, developers, and employers shape those decisions. He will share findings from Commute Seattle's 2022 Commute Survey which garnered 64,000 responses and highlights from our Commuter Insights reports that slice that data by building and employer.
